Thanks to all who backed county use of infirmary
A year ago you ran my letter regarding the use of the former
Dutchess
County infirmary property. I still believe it should
not be sold but
remain county-owned and provide services for
eastern Dutchess residents.
An interim report on eastern Dutchess services was issued by the
county
planning department early this year and the Legislature
held three
public hearings in March and April. The Washington
town board voted on
April 11 to urge that the infirmary stay in
county ownership and to
provide services there as needed.
Many people signed a petition agreeing with the Washington
resolution,
given to a special committee formed to come up with
suggestions. The
committee didn't want the property sold for $1
for affordable housing.
While that's sorely needed, it should
be near mass transportation or
within a short walk to stores,
church etc. The committee didn't want all
the Farm and Home
Center agencies moved to the infirmary property; why rent when you can own
your own property? That's to list only a few of the committee's
ideas.
A resolution is being drawn up at the Legislature which I will
co-sponsor, accepting the planning department's report and
recommending to the county executive that the property remain in county
hands, with the buildings retrofitted to provide services for eastern
Dutchess residents.
I wish to thank whoever started the petition, all who carried it,
and
especially those who took the time to sign it.
