HOW YOU CAN HELP

Your letters will let those in government know that more serious efforts need to be made --
to find and make poorhouse records readily available to researchers.

Let public officials know that you feel Dutchess County needs a Historian and a County Archives

If we had a historian and an archivist--  more records would almost certainly surface.

Keep informed  as we add names of those known or believed to be buried at this cemetery. As we post new records for those believed to have died at the Poorhouse, check to see if you know about any of these individuals. Could they be a member of your family tree?

Share your information with us.

We want to make government officials aware that the individuals buried in the cemetery all had a story to tell and were more than just a number

Check your family records to see if you find any notations in the records you have for family from Dutchess that died here.  Are they are buried in "County Cemetery", "Briar Hill Cemetery", or an unspecified "Millbrook cemetery".  These could all be possibilites for burials in the Poorhouse/Potter's Field Cemetery.  This cemetery was most likely used for burials of other indigent persons; other than those who "died" at the Poorhouse.

If  there is documentation that indicates that a member of your family tree appears to possibly have been buried in the Poorhouse/Potter's Field Cemetery, share their story with me as you know it.

Consider allowing me to link with your web page with that story or give me permission to post your story on my web site with proper credit given. It can be linked to the death/"died" record I researched and posted.

Request Research Assistance. Have you found a burial location for them? Let me know if you haven't - I will add them to my list for further research and as a person possibly buried in the Poorhouse/Potter's Field Cemetery.

Sign up to be a future volunteer.

At this point, from recent newspaper articles, it appears that the County is planning on cleaning out and fencing the cemetery but just in case that does not happen - I would like to have a list of willing volunteers ready to call upon. These volunteers could also be called upon to provide continuing maintenance in the future

Transcribe some records
for posting on the website.
I have collected several hundred pages from Dutchess County Board of Supervisors early proceedings which contain much data on individuals in the Poorhouse, including name, town from, age, date of admittance, date of discharge, length of stay and could all be very helpful to researchers as they are for years that are in between census years.
Help with fund raising. At some point we would also like to see that a dedicated substantial monument/marker is placed at the site? If you know of a benefactor who may be interested in funding such a monument/marker, let me know.  Possibly you might know of grant monies available for this type of endeavor; or perhaps you may be experienced with writing applications for such grants.
