HELP
SAVE A Dutchess County CEMETERY!
&
A piece of Dutchess County HISTORY!

January 13, 2003

Dear County Executive Steinhaus:

On November 8, 2002 I hand-delivered to your office a letter (copy enclosed) with enclosures regarding the referenced subject in which I
offered the services of Brian McAdoo along with his students at Vassar College and myself regarding research and documentation  pertaining to the Infirmary Site in the Town of Washington.

I write to inquire as to whether or not you have had the opportunity to review my earlier correspondence and the enclosed "Geophysical Survey of the Ulster County Fairgrounds (Formerly the Ulster County Poorhouse)" prepared by Professor McAdoo's students.

With planning for the Fall Semester Classes soon at hand, it would advantageous for Professor McAdoo and/or myself to discuss this matter with you or those you may wish to appoint in this regard, as soon as possible.

This is an excellent opportunity for the County to be pro-active in regard to preserving the history of this County owned property and
Potter's Field for future generations.  The services of Professor McAdoo and his students would be at little or no cost to the County. It would be helpful, if the County gives its permission for this endeavor, for some assistance from the county in clearing some small trees from the site or giving permission for volunteers to do so.

Looking forward to discussing this matter with you, and thanking you in advance for the courtesy of a reply at your earliest onvenience, I remain

Sincerely, Virginia A. Buechele

Honorable County Executive and Legislature District Representatives,

As a citizen and taxpayer of Dutchess County, I find it disconcerting that I have not received a reply to my correspondence addressed to County Executive Steinhaus dated November 8, 2002 and January 13, 2003.

I write to you today in hopes that all members of the legislature will receive a copy of this and I may soon receive a written reply either from the Legislature or the County Executive.  Perhaps there is some member of the Legislature that will assist me in bringing this matter to floor of the Legislature and champion this opportunity for Dutchess County to be pro-active.  For the County to be indifferent to this piece of Dutchess County history, is a form of ingratitude. Everything we have today is the result of the experiences of  ALL of  those before us who faced adversity, made a sacrifice, kept the faith and created the basis for what we experience today in our lives and for which we should show appreciation. If we seek to know where this County is heading, we need to know where we have been. History is an extension of life. History extends the meaning of life. If we do not preserve our history we deny future generations the opportunity to determine their future and reap the benefits of the experiences of past generations.

The following represents the text of my correspondence to County Executive Steinhaus regarding the Dutchess County Infirmary Site/ Potter's Field to which I have received no reply as of today.
