The next meeting of the Public Works & Transportation Committee is
scheduled for Tuesday Sept. 17, 2002 at 4 PM.  This is the Committe
that will recommend to the full legislature what they feel should be
done
with the County Owned Site.

If you are new to this site or have not had the
opportunity to keep up with this issue,
refer to my Web Site for Background!

If you send an E to any member of the Committee, it might also be a
good idea to copy the legislature.    If you know of anyone who
could attend the meeting on the 17th it would sure be a blessing
if they could make their voice known in person as there is time allowed
for Public Comment at these meetings.  Although E-mails are
great and I am assured are distributed to all legislatures mail boxes
when sent to the  County Legislature  , I do think it carries
somewhat more weight when the legislature sees that those concerned take
the time to attend the meeting and make their voice heard in person
especially when their meetings are held a 4PM in the afternoon when it
is difficult for most to attend in person.

The members of the Public Works & Transportation Committee
with/e-mail addresses if they are on the list I just picked up are:

David Kelly , Chairman (R) Dist. 23 Pawling, Beekman

 Hamilton Meserve, Vice-Chairman, (R) Dist. 28 - Amenia, Stanford

 John V. Forman, (R), Dist. 18 - Beacon

 Edward Haas , (R) Dist. 32 - Rhinebeck, NY

 James Hammond , (R) Dist. 6 -T/Pok/Wappinger

 Gerald Hutchings , (R) Dist. 22 - Beekman

 Camile Price, (R) Dist, 16 - Fishkill/Wappinger

Mary Swartz, (R) Dist. 12 - E. Fishkill

John Ballo, (D), Dist. 19, Fishkill/Beacon

 Mario Johnson, (D), Dist. 10, C/Pok

The minutes of this past Monday's Meeting were not available yet.  I
hope
to hear from them when they are!

If you haven't already written and intend to do so,
see if you can get a plug in for a County Historian also<g>
I picked up the pages from the 2002 County Budget.
Account A7510 Department of History Total Budget $46,500
Clerk PT $10,734
Prin Pro Asst $35, 252
Historian $514
I was informed that year to date this money has not been spent and will
revert to the General Fund if it is not expended.  Such has been the
case over the last several years.
Clerk $10, 734 - Historian $514???????????????C'mon!*!
Subsequently, upon checking with the Budget Office,
I was informed that abt. $30,000 has been expended year to date (Sept, 2002) from this Department for Wages & Office Supplies, etc. for
Records Management.

Why don't we have a County Historian?
Has the County not Advertised to fill these positions?????
What are the job descriptions and qualifications required ???? -
How does one apply????? I Plan to call for this info on Monday!*!
I was informed by the Personnell Office that the Position of
County Historian was "abolished" in the 90's.
Such must not be the case since we are required by, I believe, our
County Charter to have a County Historian.
There is simply no one willing to accept the position for $514.

Why 35K for a Prin Pro Asst, 10K for a PT Clerk and only $514 for a
Historian????? who will probably be the one doing the most work?????
Give me$46,500 and I'll take the job<g>and give me some refurbished
space at the County Infirmary Site that should remain in County Hands<g>
Voila, it would be better than no County Historian at all<g>

The Girl in the County Legislature Office was there alone and did not
have the information I needed about the schedule for this years budget
process but said she believed the County Hearings on the 2003 budget
will take place in November.  The County Executive presents a budget to
the Legislature and then Public Hearing are held.

If we had a County Historian he/she could certainly be on top of what
happens with the historic cemetery on the infirmary site, after all I've
already done alot of the work already <g>and he/she could be on top of
other County Historical Resources as well.

If you hear of anyone else who would like to write to their particular
County Legislator in regard to these matters, let me know  or have them
e-mail me and if their legislator has an E-mail address on this list I
just picked up, I will give it to them untill such time as I have time
to post all legislators with e-mail addresses available to my web site.

If you would like to send a letter by US Mail the Mailing Address is:

I'll be at the Meeting on the 17th - would love to see some of the local
individuals there also.

My Mission
is that together we can insure that this piece of Dutchess County
History
is preserved for future generations,
find the Records that correspond with the numbered burials, and
that those buried here may
REST WITH
DIGNITY
&
IN PEACE.

Legislature committee will discuss infirmary

A discussion of a plan to establish a county government services center on the site of the former county infirmary in the Town of Washington will take place at 4 p.m. Tuesday at a meeting of the Dutchess County Legislature's Public Works & Transportation Committee.

The committee was scheduled to have the discussion two different times in the past week, but ended up not dealing with the subject.

The proposal calls for using the site to house satellite offices of county agencies to serve residents in eastern Dutchess.

The infirmary has been closed several years and officials have yet to decide what to do with the buildings and property.

County Executive William Steinhaus recommended the site be used for county offices nearly a year ago. Legislative leaders formed two different subcommittees to look into the best use of the site. Neither panel reached a conclusion on what should be done with the property.

The committee meets on the sixth floor of the County Office Building, 22 Market St., Poughkeepsie.
